Miradi supports development and tracking of multiple types of performance measures to assess progress along your theories of change:
- Goals can be developed for Conservation Targets
- Objectives can be developed for any type of Result, and
- Indicators can be developed for Targets and Results, and related to Goals, Objectives and any type of Action (Strategy, Activity / Monitoring Activity / Task).
Learn how to add these factors directly to your Results Chains, or build them using the SMART Guide.
Add Goals, Objectives, and Indicators to Results Chains
We don't yet have an article describing these features but this 8 minute YouTube tutorial provides a full explanation of how to add and work with these factors in Miradi:
Build a SMART Goal or Objective using the SMART Guide
When creating Goals or Objectives, use the SMART Guide to make sure they are
- Specific - Clearly defined so that all people involved in the project have the same understanding of what the terms in the goal or objective mean.
- Measurable - Definable in relation to some standard scale (numbers, percentage, fractions, descriptive categories, or all / nothing states).
- Achievable - Practical and appropriate within the context of the project site and in light of the political, social, and financial context (especially relevant to objectives; goals may be more aspirational).
- Results-Oriented - Represents necessary changes in target condition, threat reduction, and/or other key expected results. You make your objective results-oriented by building it on a key factor in your results chain
- Time-Limited - Achievable within a specific period of time, generally 1-10 years for an objective and 10-20 years for a goal.
When adding Goals to Targets, or Objectives to Results, select 'Use SMART Guide' to walk through a set of guided steps and watch your SMART statement take shape.
After completing the steps in the SMART Guide, you will have
- A Goal (on a Target) or Objective (on a Result) with a SMART statement included in the Details field. For example, "By 2023, 90% of tour groups are requesting "green" tours".
- An Indicator that sits on the same parent factor and is directly related to the Goal or Objective, with the Units defined. For example, "Number of tour groups requesting "green" tours", measured as "%".
- A single Desired Future Status point for the Indicator, with the Date and Value defined for the SMART Objective or Goal. For example:
- Date of future status = 2030
- Value of indicator at future status date = 90%
