Export Situation Model and Results Chain diagram images
Situation Model and Results Chain diagram images can be exported as .PNG or .SVG files. Generally,
- PNG files are raster files that work well in situations where you do not need to increase the size of the image too much, or edit the diagram content outside of Miradi. PNGs work well for presentations (e.g. PowerPoint or Google Slides) and report documents (e.g. Word or Google Docs), online or printed.
- SVG files are vector files that can be scaled to any size and edited in other systems such as Adobe Illustrator and PowerPoint. SVG files exported from Miradi also include some attributes of the Miradi factors. SVGs work well if you need to create a large poster, edit the content of the diagram outside of Miradi, or import and manipulate the diagram in another system, such as Microsoft PowerBI. Learn more about Exporting a diagram image for a poster.
Export a diagram image
To export a diagram image, navigate to the diagram canvas under the Situation Assessment or Theory of Change section. In the upper right of the diagram canvas, find the EXPORT button. Select PNG or SVG and save to your computer. NOTE: Read the TIPS below before exporting your images.
To export a diagram image for inclusion in a report document generated using Miradi's report document template feature, see Export an image for inclusion in report document templates.
TIPS on exporting diagram images
The diagram export process is easy, but setting up your diagram canvas so you get exactly the image you want takes a little work. A few things to consider when exporting images:
1. The image that is exported is EXACTLY what you see on your screen within the diagram canvas, including the white space around the diagram content. Make sure you can see the entire diagram canvas frame (gray border), and that you like the way your image is centered in the frame. In the example below, the orange dashed box shows the extent of the image that will be exported.
If you can't see the bottom of the diagram canvas, switch to Full Screen view (upper right of the canvas) to make sure you can see the entire diagram canvas.
2. Depending on your browser settings, your diagram canvas might change size after you export an image. If your browser includes a pop-up at the bottom of your window that shows downloaded documents, your diagram canvas will change size after you export an image. This is not a problem if you are only exporting one image, but if you are trying to export multiple images of the exact same size (in order to create an animated slideshow with layered diagram images, for example) check to see if your browser includes a pop-up at the bottom and adjust your exports as needed.
3. Use the Visibility tools to turn on/off Miradi content. Since the diagram export is WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get), you will need to adjust the Visibility settings to show exactly the content you want in your export. Access the Visibility tools (1) on the left of the diagram canvas to show or hide
content. HINT: The blue dot on the Visibility icon means that something is currently hidden.
Export Action Chart images
A chart showing the status of Actions (Strategies, Activities, Monitoring Activities, and Tasks) can be viewed and exported from the Action Chart section of the main window or from the Strategy + Activity Progress Chart under Data Views.
Export the Action Chart
Navigate to WORK PLANNING > Actions and select the Action Chart (3) to view the status of all Actions in your Miradi project. Use the Display sector (4) to display all Strategies (and their Activities and Tasks) as a list, or display Strategies by Results Chain or Situation Model. Use the Factor Types filter (5) to select the data that appears in the chart.
Once you have the chart looking the way that you want it to, use EXPORT in the upper right to download and save a PNG file. Note that the downloaded image will look exactly as it does on the screen, including all of the page headers and tools (see image below). If you would like to export a clean chart image that does not include all of the page headers and tools, see Export the Strategy + Activity Progress Chart from Data Views.
To export an Action Chart image for inclusion in a report document generated using Miradi's report document template feature, see Export an image for inclusion in report document templates.
Export the Strategy + Activity Progress Chart from Data Views
Action charts can also be viewed, customized, saved and exported from Data Views. There are two ways to access Data Views: Navigate to Data Views and select the Strategy + Activity Progress Chart,
or go to REPORTS & DATA > Data Views. Use the Data View selector (3 below) to choose the Strategy + Activity Progress Chart. Note the Export option in the upper right above the chart.
The standard chart view can be customized using the View Data as Table button in the upper right. For example, the chart can be customized to only show those strategies associated with the Rat Elimination results chain by filtering the data while in table view.
The chart exported from this view only includes the chart data and does not include any of the other page content.
Export Indicator Chart images
Indicator data displayed in a chart can also be exported from any location in Miradi Share where an indicator's properties are visible. For example, for Target Indicators, charts can be viewed and edited from the Factor Properties panel in diagram view, from the Target Viability page in the Situation Assessment section, or from the Results and Target Impact pages in the PROGRESS TRACKING section, as shown below.
To export an Indicator Chart, navigate to an Indicator in one of the locations described above (1-3), open the Indicator Chart (4), click the EXPORT button in the upper right, select PNG and save it to your computer.
To export an Indicator Chart image for inclusion in a report document generated using Miradi's report document template feature, see Export an image for inclusion in report document templates.
Export diagram images for posters or editing in other systems
Miradi diagrams can be exported, modified, and blown up to poster size by exporting diagram images as .SVG files. SVG is a vector file format that does not lose its quality when resized. SVGs can also be edited in Adobe Illustrator, or imported into PowerPoint and converted to objects that can be edited.
To export your diagram as a .SVG file, follow the same instructions as above for Exporting diagram images, and be sure to keep in mind the TIPS for exporting diagram images to make sure you are exporting the desired version of your diagram: Navigate to the diagram canvas under Situation Assessment or Theory of Change, and use the EXPORT button in the upper right to save a .SVG.
Create a poster using your .SVG file
Diagrams exported as .SVG files can easily be used to create posters of any size in PowerPoint:
- Create a new PowerPoint file with a single slide.
- Set the size of your poster: Go to File / Page Setup ( or Design / Slide Size / Page Setup) and select your page size.
- Use Insert Picture to insert your diagram SVG.
- Expand your image to the appropriate size for your poster.
- Follow the directions below to Edit your .SVG file, including adjusting the text to read well at poster-size.
Edit your .SVG file
Diagrams exported as .SVGs can be edited in Adobe Illustrator, or imported to PowerPoint and converted to objects for editing. To edit a diagram SVG file in PowerPoint:
- Insert your image.
- Resize your image to roughly the right size on your slide.
- Right-click on your image and select "Convert to Shape". Your diagram content now exists as independent shapes in your slide and can be edited as much as desired.
- Ungroup content using the "Arrange" tools (or right-click on a shape) and select shapes for editing
Export images for inclusion in templated report documents
Miradi project data can be exported to formatted Word documents, and those documents can include images generated from Miradi content. Learn more about Using Report Document Templates.
To include images in a report generated using a report template, all images must be saved in the PROJECT OVERVIEW > Files & Resources section of your Miradi project.
Note that for an image to be successfully included in a report document, the "Document Reference" for each image must match the reference in the report template. Use the Edit pencil to edit the Document Reference for images that are already saved in the Report Document Image library.
To export a diagram or chart image directly to the Report Document Image library, follow the same Export steps described above but choose the PNG > REPORT DOCUMENT IMAGE option, as shown below when exporting a diagram.
When saving the image to the Report Document Image library, be sure to enter the appropriate Document Reference. Scroll through the existing images in the library and replace an older image if necessary.
