In Miradi, information is organized in "projects". A Miradi project is a relational database comprising all the information for a single conservation plan, whether focused on a single species, habitat or geography, or a larger conservation program. The important thing to note is that all the information within a single Miradi project is housed in a single database, so relationships between factors within the project can be defined and information can be packaged together within the project.
Miradi projects can be created online or created in Miradi Desktop and then imported into Miradi Share. If you want to create a project online but occasionally work in Desktop, make sure you have the latest version of Miradi installed on your computer (Download Desktop here).
There are two different spaces where you can create Miradi projects:
- Standalone Projects space: All Miradi users with a paid subscription (either Pro or Team Plan) can create new projects in the Standalone space. These projects are visible only to you, unless you add other Miradi users to your Miradi project as viewers or editors. Learn more about creating projects in the Standalone Projects space.
- Program space: If your organization has a Team Plan, or if your access to Miradi is covered by a partner organization with a Team Plan, you will likely also have access to that organization's Miradi program space. Projects you create in the program space or visible to anyone with appropriate permissions to view or add the project. Learn more about Project Access State and Miradi User Roles that set permissions. Learn more about creating projects in a Program or Team space.
In the image below, a logged in Miradi user sees the Standalone Projects space (1) on the left under the MY PROJECTS menu. Projects can be added to this space using the "+ ADD PROJECTS" button, and any existing projects the user owns or is a member of are listed on the right.
In this example, this Miradi user is also a member of the International Crane Foundation and Endangered Wildlife Trust program space (2). If that program is selected, the user will see a list of projects for which they are a team member, and if they have appropriate permissions they will have the option to +ADD PROJECT to that program space.
Note that if a logged in Miradi user selects the ADD PROJECT button from the home screen, they will be given the choice to create a project in the Standalone space or in a program space.

Create a new project online
You will need to have a paid Pro Plan or Team Plan in order to create Miradi projects online. With a Pro Plan, you will create projects in the Standalone Projects space. If you are a member of a Team Plan, you will create projects within your custom Program or Team space.
Create a project within the Standalone Projects space
Once you log in to your Miradi account, go to My Projects to see the Standalone space and any programs you have access to.
To create a project in the Standalone Projects space, navigate to My Projects, select Standalone Projects in the menu on the left, and click the "+ Add Project" button on the right.
Select "Create a new project" and follow the instructions.
Under "Advanced" select the most up to date version of Miradi (e.g. 4.6). NOTE: If your team works in Miradi desktop and is not able to upgrade to the latest version of desktop software, select Miradi 4.5 or older.
When your project is created you will be taken to the homepage of your new blank project.
To find your project the next time you log in to Miradi, go to My Projects, find the Standalone Projects space in the menu on the left, and see your Example New Project in the list on the right.
Create a project within a custom Miradi Program or Team space
The process to create a project within your custom program space is the same as creating a project in the Standalone Projects space, but first you need to access your custom program space, AND you need appropriate permissions (Program Partner or higher) to create projects within the program space. Contact your Program Manager or Program Admin to change your permissions within your program space.
Navigate to your program space by going to My Projects and selecting your program from the menu on the left. You will see a list of all the projects you have access to in the program (in this example I do not have access to any projects), as well as the "+ Add Project" button. If the button is not active, contact your program manager to upgrade your permissions. Follow the steps for creating a project in the Standalone Projects space.
You can also add new projects from within a program. In the upper left of the program page, select the "+ Add Project" button and follow the steps above.
To find your new project in your program space the next time you log in, find your program under the My Projects tab and locate your new project in the list on the right.
Create a new project online from an existing Miradi Desktop project
Old and new Miradi Desktop projects can be used to create new projects online. First, you will need to export your Miradi Desktop project as a .xmpz2 Miradi Share file and save it to your hard drive. In Miradi Desktop, open the project and in the upper left of the window go to File / Export Miradi Share Project File.
Once you have saved your .xmpz2 project file, go to Miradi Online and follow the steps above for creating a project in the Standalone Projects space (or in a program space). In the Add Project dialog, select "Create project from an existing Miradi project", and complete the steps.
Create a new project online from an existing online project (copy a project)
There are two ways to create a new project from a copy of an existing project online: 1. Copy a project in the same program space or 2. download a project and use it to create a new project somewhere else.
If you want to create a copy of a project in the same program space or Standalone Projects space, use the "Copy Project" button found at the top of any project page.
To create a project in a different space, download the project to your hard drive and follow the instructions for creating a project in the Standalone Projects space (or in a program space).
