Almost all Miradi functionality is available online in Miradi Share, aside from a limited set of tools covered under When would I need to use Desktop? Many teams never need to use Miradi Desktop and can do all of their work online in Miradi Share, while other teams and inviduals choose to continue using Desktop as a companion tool.
Access to Miradi Share and Miradi Desktop are included with any paid Miradi Pro or Team Plan. See Plans & Pricing to determine which system is right for you.
Why does Miradi include both an online and desktop application?
Miradi Desktop was initially a stand-alone, desktop software system. Miradi Share (aka Miradi Online) was developed as a companion online system for sharing information. Now, Miradi Share is the primary application but these two systems continue to work together as "Miradi".
When would I need to use Miradi Desktop?
Poor internet: If you are working in an area with poor internet access, Miradi Desktop allows you to work entirely offline. Simply check out your Miradi project from Miradi Share, and open it in Miradi Desktop. While your project is checked out, Miradi Share will not allow others to edit your project, but it will still be available for viewing. When you are back online, check your project in to Miradi Share; the online project will be updated and edit access will be restored to your team. Learn more about checking projects out to work in Desktop.
Work planning and budget tools: Almost all Miradi data can be viewed and edited in Miradi Share, but you must still check out your Miradi file to edit a limited amount of content in Miradi Desktop:
With a Team Plan, you have access to detailed work planning tools in Miradi Share. Learn more about work planning in Miradi Share. There are a limited number of budget fields that still need to be edited in desktop, such as Currency, Work Unit Rates, and existing Funding Sources that were created in Miradi Desktop. Learn more about budget fields that must still be edited in Miradi Desktop.
With a Pro Plan you do not yet have access to detailed work planning tools online in Miradi Share, but you can access the same tools in Desktop. Check out and open your project in Desktop to create and manage work plans in Desktop, then check them back in to Miradi Share and access the detailed work plan content in Work Plan Data Views.
Do I have to use Miradi Online or can I use only Miradi Desktop?
Yes, it is currently possible to use Miradi Desktop as a standalone desktop application. In some cases this is necessary if your internet connection is very slow or nonexistent, or if your organization does not allow the use of cloud-based applications. Contact us if you require a Desktop-only plan.
Miradi Desktop includes all the same features for individual projects as Miradi Online but you lose the ability to share your projects with others for viewing online and you lose some nice program features. Online, you can
- Share projects with other team members for collaborative editing
- Manage multiple related projects in a single program or team space
- Use standard and custom reports to export Miradi project data to Word in a consistent format
- Easily export your data to Excel for analysis and presentation
See Plans & Pricing to determine which system is right for you.
What will happen to Miradi Desktop in the future?
Eventually, full online editing capabilities will be enabled, at which point Miradi Desktop will no longer be necessary. Miradi Desktop will continue to be available as a legacy system.
